Candy Chang graduated from Columbia University with a degree in urban planning. Her projects are known in many countries and cities. My favorite of her works was a simple, simply beautiful, interactive project in my beloved New Orleans.
More than public art, more than interactive art, the project Before I Die was a way to build community among neighbors and passers-by. By sharing, reading, and reflecting on shared hopes, fears, desires, dreams, and realities in public spaces, the people involved to any degree with Before I Die - reading or contributing or both, have formed a better sense of our connectedness in this world.
I'm impressed enough to begin to work on such a project in several locations in Oakland and Fresno. I've contacted Candy Chang to ask for advice, permission to work the idea, and for her thoughts about obtaining city support, civic agency support, local art group support - along with having a bit of, well...not censorship, but encouragement for appropriateness.
Take a look and tell me you aren't moved.
Moreover, take a look and tell me what you'd write.
